The Founding of New Jersey College for Women

In 1918 in New Brunswick a college for women was founded by the name of New Jersey College for Women. Enrolled in the first class at NJC, as the College was known, were 54 students. The first Commencement took place on Saturday, June 10, 1922 at 10 a.m., when 42 students graduated. (The flu epidemic of 1918, it is said, diminished the ranks of the first class.)

The plaque pictured here was purchased as a gift for Ruth Schilling Hennessy '50 by a classmate at an antique store in Lake Worth, Florida, in early 1995. The shopowner did not recollect the origin of the piece, and there are no markings on it that might indicate where it came from. If you can help identify the origin of the plaque, please let us know.
